About the SMPA
History of the SMPA
The SMPA (Sports Medicine & Performance Association) recognises the importance of the work of medicine and performance practitioners and their contribution to professional sport. This increasingly influential group has, until now, no singular, combined representative body to give them an independent voice and representation.
Working in professional sports can be challenging for medicine and performance practitioners. The Sports Medicine and Performance Association (SMPA) has been launched to support our colleagues within four main areas; Legal, Recruitment, Wellbeing and Education.
LEGAL
The SMPA works closely with lawyers who have significant expertise in professional sports and essentially with medicine and performance practitioners. Our lawyers can assist with contracts, dismissals and disciplinaries ensuring that a fair deal is negotiated.
CONTRACT ADVICE
SMPA members can have their contract reviewed free of charge by the SMPA lawyers who are experts within our industry. It is worth remembering that a robust contract forms the basis of any settlement agreement and determines the outcome of any severance pay.
RECRUITMENT
Procuring a job in professional sport can be challenging as competition out rivals demand. The SMPA aims to list jobs for Members only in the very first assistance and serves to provide recruiters with strong applicants with experience of working within professional sport.
WELLBEING
The wellbeing of SMPA Members is of paramount importance. We provide professional services such as financial planning as well as access to colleagues within professional sport and mental health support via our confidential helpline.
EDUCATION
By providing access to the British Journal of Sports Medicine, regular podcasts and articles we know that our Members are at the top of their game and are armoured with essential and relevant CPD.
